Second Class

READING

Today was all about reading and the brain processes involved.  We watched a movie showing how speech develops and the processes involved in reading.  I was amazed at how many things need to work together to become a successful reader.

We had to do a Reading Task Analysis to try to show all the different things readers go through to read text.  We still could go deeper but this is what we came up with so far.  I was astonished by how many things have to happen for a person to read.  It is no wonder problems in reading are so common.

We looked at some very interesting apps last class as well.  starting with:

ReadIris

This app is amazing.  It allows students to scan their own work and make it accessible from their own desks.  They no longer need to depend on the teacher to scan and photocopy texts, they have control over their own learning.  A system like this before would cost a great deal of money and be big and bulky.  With this app the technology is widely accepted, sleek, and convenient.

Another app we looked at was Navidys which is a search engine that gives you the ability to change spacing, fonts, and minimize the 'noise' on the page.  I really loved this app because it can provide a much more friendly searching atmosphere for people who need these modifications.

I also learned that in wikipedia there is the ability to press simple English and it will change the text into a simplified form of the original.  This is such an amazing feature, it gives access to many more people with low literacy skills and for people whom have English as their second language.

we also worked with two other apps that write text into symbols and an app that was also a reading app.  There are many of these apps out there and they can do very similar things.  It is wonderful that there are these opportunities available to people who need them.

  1. Thanks for sharing those apps! Having them all in a chart like that makes it very reader friendly. There were a few apps that were not presented that caught my eye in your list. One was the "photo touch sight words" app. I like that is can be set to the child's level and increased as they get more proficient. I also like that you can add in your own words with pictures included. Another app that I liked is the "Wild Fables" app, as I too enjoy Aesop's fables. I also like its interactive capabilities. Thanks for sharing them! :)
